Youkai Geb is a Sunshine Coast local artist from Gympie. His new single “Fear is stronger than love” is now available in most places online. We discuss where this song came from.
Youkai Geb –
This song is about Fear being stronger than love. How betrayal is prevalent in friendships and relationships as well as a reflection on how modern culture in hip hop can be misinterpreted. All in all its just an amalgamation of myself attempting to be retrospective.
What is your favourite line or lyric?
I had to learn the concept of a frenemy grew up feeling like a separate entity. I just think its cool, a frenemy is an interesting concept to me that you can have a friend amd enemy at the same time whilst also giving a mention to some tough upbringing.
What inspired you to create/write this song?
Fear being stronger than love is a saying I’ve heard before as a bit of a quote and I have a soft spot for poetic sayings. But this was mainly inspired by the large amount of resistance presented to me doing music and music.
Where were you when this song came about? What were you up to?
This song came from me talking to an english producer sitting in my room. I was writing other songs and lyrics when this idea came up.
Does this song have any musical influences?
It’s lofi hip hop. Just trying to get on that vein of old jazzy hip hop with meaningful lyrics. Kind of like the older joji type stuff.
